My Experience with Physical Therapy and Ehlers Danlos

As someone with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, I know firsthand that finding the right physical therapist is crucial. Even with the best intentions, inexperienced physical therapists can cause harm and increase pain in those with EDS. Unfortunately, that was exactly what happened to me during my first experience with physical therapy. In this blog post, I will share my experience of finding a physical therapist with experience handling EDS symptoms, the challenges I faced, and how I ultimately overcame them.


When I first started experiencing severe pain in my muscles and joints due to EDS, my doctor recommended physical therapy. Without hesitation, I found the nearest physical therapy office and started my sessions. Unfortunately, my physical therapist had little to no experience with EDS. She incorporated aggressive stretching and strengthening exercises that caused more harm than good. I quickly realized that I needed to find someone who understood the complexities of EDS and created a specialized treatment plan.


Thankfully, after some thorough research, I was connected with a physical therapist who had experience working with EDS patients. She understood the limitations of hypermobility and designed a treatment plan that focused on gentle exercises and stretches. She was able to work with my EDS-induced pain and even recommend exercises that helped alleviate some of the discomfort. Seeking out and finding a physical therapist with specific experience working with EDS was the key to my recovery.


During therapy, I faced various challenges, physical and emotional. Being in constant pain and managing new exercises became a mentally draining experience. However, my physical therapist didn't give up on me. She continued to reinforce positivity and strength while teaching me how to manage my condition. We often had candid conversations about my experience with EDS and how it impacted me physically and emotionally.


Over time, I began seeing improvements, both big and small. I regained some mobility and started to take on more daily activities that I had given up previously. I recognize that physical therapy is not a cure, but it can provide a means to manage the condition. After my positive experience, I realized the importance of finding a physical therapist who can handle EDS, someone who can help you manage the condition effectively.


In conclusion, my experience with physical therapy and Ehlers Danlos taught me a valuable lesson: always seek out a physical therapist who specializes in EDS. Not only can they design a treatment plan that considers the limitations and challenges of EDS, but they can also provide emotional support and encouragement. Staying active and keeping my muscles strong are one of the biggest factors in my energy reserve. My experience with EDS is a battle, but finding the right physical therapist made a world of difference. I hope that by sharing my story, I can help others in similar situations to make positive, informed decisions when it comes to physical therapy and EDS.
